Carp
(Mirror/Common)

This is one of
the strongest fish, greedy and easy to catch when young but a challenge
once it reaches 10lb or so. No other still water
fish fights as hard as a carp
or
learns as quickly. It was once thought of as a summer fish but now we
know it can be caught all the year round.

Crucian
Carp

A true crucian
carp (and ours have been DNA tested) is a beautiful fish, deep bodied,
golden sided and growing to over 4lb. It is a subtle feeder and to
catch a two pounder is a real achievement.

Tench

A favourite
summer fish, with dark rounded fins, smooth olive green body and small
red eyes. Look for tiny bubbles on the surface that show where the fish
is grubbing in the silt for food.

Barbel
Famed for its fighting powers, the barbel has
until quite recently been considered a fish of fast-running rivers. In
recent years, though, it has been shown to thrive in still water,
growing very quickly in such conditions and giving tremendous sport.
Modern fishery owners are increasingly stocking with this attractive,
strong fish.

Chub
Like barbel, chub do very well in still water.
They grow quickly and as a shoal fish can give great sport. Sprayed
maggot will often bring them higher in the water and send them into a
feeding frenzy, but they will take almost any bait and will feed in
almost any weather conditions. They make an interesting addition to the
usual bottom-feeding fish like carp and tench.

many anglers.
